The Kure Port, located at the west of Kure city, used to prosper as the "number one naval port in the East" during the war time. Now, the base of Japan Maritime Self Defense Force is located and there is a park where you can walk around freely. It is famous for being the only place in Japan where you get to see submarines and escort vessels on active service. Not only this but also the remains of war time such as a building which used to be the old Japanese Navy's war plant and a crane which was used to raise and lower torpedos, are a must-see. Enjoy the atmosphere of the port town and experience the past and the present of Kure.
